The topic tree is the main reason many people choose a visual MQTT client. It turns slash-separated namespaces into a browsable structure so related devices and payloads stay together.
Read from stable prefixes outward
Start at the highest meaningful namespace—such as a site, integration, or device family—and expand only the branch relevant to the task.
Distinguish state, telemetry, and commands
State topics describe current conditions, telemetry often updates frequently, and command topics can change device behavior. Treat each category differently during diagnosis.
Watch update frequency
Rapidly changing values can reveal noisy sensors or over-frequent publishing. A value that never changes may be retained or stale.
Use payload context
Look at JSON structure, numeric ranges, booleans, timestamps, and units together. The topic name alone rarely tells the whole story.
